Jim Radakovich was showing in the East Village in 1981, and in 1985 Arts Magazine named him among its "New Irascibles." Giants is his first New York solo presentation since 2019.
He paints landscape the old way, in layered oil with weather in the sky and distance in the hills, and then sets something impossible in it. Find the pleasure without the guilt, get stunned by a surprised encounter, or cook up some potion for love. Come wander, stay, or get lost in the realm created by Radakovich.

Before / After Thought
A surrealism group exhibition · seven painters · Collective Z
Before / After Thought closes Saturday. If you have not been, this is the week.
Two paintings are worth standing in front of before the show comes down. Claire Hashman's Chimera and Jocelyn Tsaih's Glass Chime are both built on a mirror. Hashman's is a yellow bloom on deep blue, soft-edged, somewhere between a flower and an animal, which is what the title promises. Tsaih's is flat and graphic, a green outline presents an aura that’s mighty . Both are painted with complete control, yet both look like something out of a dream, and both challenge what is traditionally classified as surrealism.

Cécile Roberfroid · solo exhibition · October 1–17
"What do we carry without ever saying it out loud?" Cécile Roberfroid's paintings answer in oil. Fields of citrus yellow, ochre, rose and green are layered and scraped back until something surfaces: a shoulder, a hand, two figures holding each other. In the black-and-white canvases the color falls away and the figures come fully forward. In the works on paper, torn maps and stitched sheets gather into a sleeping body.
Trained at the School of Visual Arts, with graduate degrees in psychology and art therapy from Columbia and NYU, Roberfroid paints the part of an experience that never gets said. It is held, not declared. This is her first solo exhibition with Collective Z.
The artist will be present, and white wine will be served.
