Conviction closes this Saturday. Before it does, three things: the exhibition’s first press feature, one last evening with the artist, and a first look at what opens next at the gallery.
Urgent Matter on Conviction
On July 25, Urgent Matter published Adam Schrader’s feature on the exhibition — on the garments painted empty of their wearers, nine women held across ten paintings, and the twenty-seven small canvases of handmade objects from inside Evin prison.
“These women are there, they’re fighting, and they’re suffering, and they’re not to be pitied. They’re heroes.”

Wine with the artist, and a final long look at the nine women’s garments, the Evin series, and the film Time — before the exhibition closes Saturday and the series scatters. This is the last evening with the work.

Our next exhibition pairs Gwen Yip’s Subway Backs — riders observed from behind on the platforms of the New York subway, flattened, precise, held at a distance by the architecture that contains them — with Spencer Patrick’s Artificial, whose solitary figures rest, eyes closed, inside comfort they have carefully manufactured. Public passage and private ritual, two forms of turning away: together the works ask how the man-made became our nature, and what of the first nature remains.
